While there are many tourists who come to taste Moroccan culture, there are also a growing number of zuwar—spiritually inclined individuals visiting Fez to taste its rich religious and spiritual history—seeking the many awliya of the city to take their barakah, to visit the places they lived, taught, or are buried, and to sit among the contemporary Sufis of Fez in circles of Divine remembrance.

For many visitors, there is often very little information provided or guidance offered for visiting the many sacred sites of Fez. Most guidebooks will speak about the most important sites, such as the masjid al-Qarawiyyin and the zawiyyah of Sheikh Ahmed al-Tijani. This only scratches the surface. A city as ancient and as important as Fez has produced thousands of awliya and mystics, and they have left their indelible mark on the city.

The city of Fez is abundantly rich—culturally, intellectually, and spiritually. Fez has been home to some of the greatest religious scholars, mystic masters, writers, scientists, and teachers of the Islamic world. From Leo the African and Ibn Khaldun to Ibn al-Arabi and Maimonides, this city has hosted some of the best minds of history.

They walked these streets, visited these mosques, studied in these schools, and shopped in this suqs. As the city of saints, Fez is known for its importance as a city of Sufism, where many of the greatest spiritual guides were trained, inspired, or taught. The graves of hundreds of friends of God, awliya Allah, fill every corner of this city.

Many of them are still visited and sought for their barakah, their blessedness. Many more are lost or forgotten, their graves defaced and their zawiyyahs crumbling. It is also a city known for its cultural production throughout the ages. It is renowned for its goods and craftsmen—leather, herbs, metalworking, carpentry, and much more. It is also renowned for its stunning art—geometrical zillij patterns, intuitive symmetry, and rich plaster flourishes. The artistic culture of Fez fulfils the perennial mission of Islamic art—to mirror the beauty and harmony of the Heavens.

This book intends to be a resource for the za’ir, the spiritual visitor of Fez, those who seek to encounter the religious, intellectual, and cultural history and life of the city of saints.

The majority of the book is almost complete except for a few maps of the old city that still need to be completed and inserted. We plan to publish the book by the spring of 2021. Your support will ensure that the book is completed on time and to a high quality.
